Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Seated before a plain studio ground and turned slightly to her left, this woman presents the spare, unadorned framing that distinguished E. Appert's political and judicial portrait work from conventional commercial studio photography of the period. Appert, a Parisian portrait photographer, gained exclusive access to prison facilities and made individual portraits as part of his broader documentary practice, and he quickly developed a stripped-down portrait style in which the sitter posed seated on a chair against a plain background, precisely as seen here.

The subject wears a dark, collarless jacket fastened with a column of round buttons at center front, beneath which a light-colored underbodice or chemisette is visible at the neckline. Her dark hair is swept back from a center part and gathered behind the ears. She sits in a plain wooden chair, her hands resting in her lap, her expression direct and composed. No jewelry, ornamentation, or studio props are present.

Appert specialized as a portraitist of political and institutional figures across all affiliations and worked for the Ministry of Justice as an expert photographer accredited to the Tribunal de la Seine. In 1868 he established his own studio at 24 rue Taitbout, where this card was produced. He operated at that address until 1877, when he moved to 21 rue Louis-le-Grand.

The recto mount is printed at lower left: "E. APPERT, Phot. Expert. / Déposé." (E. Appert, Expert Photographer. / Registered.) and at lower right: "Reproduction / interdite." (Reproduction / prohibited.) The reverse bears the full studio imprint identifying Appert as Photographer to the Legislative Body, Painter-Photographer to H.M. the Queen of Spain and to H.I.H. Grand Duke Constantin, and Expert to the Tribunal de la Seine, 24 Rue Taitbout, Paris. Inscribed in pencil at the top of the reverse: "Betiffe" (or similar; exact reading uncertain).
