The active, occupational pose is uncommon for the period and suggests a deliberate effort to document the subject's trade identity rather than produce a conventional portrait. The card's decorative border, printed in rose-red ink with scrollwork corner ornaments, is characteristic of Gove & Allen's presentation style from the 1860s and 1870s.

The man wears a dark sack coat over a lighter waistcoat, dark trousers, and leather shoes, with shirt cuffs visible at the wrist. He holds a triangular metal tool, likely a try square or scraper, in his right hand while his left arm braces against the bench surface; additional long flat stock and what appears to be a clamp or vise attachment are visible at floor level beneath the bench.

Gove & Allen operated studios across four Australian cities simultaneously, with addresses in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Ballarat, placing this card within one of the most ambitious commercial photography enterprises in colonial Australia during the 1860s and 1870s.

The card reverse bears the printed imprint: "Gove & Allen, 324 George St. Sydney, 95 Swanston St., Melbourne; 23 King William St., Adelaide; and 6 Sturt St., Ballarat."
