Carte de visite format tintype depicting an African American woman seated outdoors on a rustic bench with two white children in her care, one an infant seated on her lap and the other an older child posed beside her. All three are dressed in light-colored garments, with the woman wearing a high-collared blouse typical of domestic attire. The setting appears to be an exterior garden or park, suggested by the natural background and wooden bench. The photographic process is a tintype mounted in CDV format, likely dating to the late 1860s to early 1880s based on clothing and presentation.

The image reflects a common but rarely preserved subject of the period: a Black domestic caretaker photographed alongside the children she tended, an arrangement that underscores household labor roles in the post-Civil War era. The composition centers the caretaker prominently, rather than marginally, which is notable within vernacular photography of this type.

Plain CDV mount with the tintype plate visible at the edges, including areas of wear and oxidation consistent with the process. No photographer’s imprint or handwritten identification is visible on the mount.
