English author Thomas Carlyle is portrayed in a close bust CDV by Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, Portman Square, London, with the printed designation Carlyle / Copyright on the front mount, showing the Scottish historian and essayist in extreme old age. Carlyle faces to his left in a three-quarter profile, his abundant white hair swept back in loose waves, a full white beard and mustache framing his deeply lined face, and his eyes cast slightly downward in a pose of evident age and gravity. He wears a dark coat with a white shirt visible at the open collar, and his hand is raised to his chin in a reflective gesture.

The close framing and strong side lighting emphasize the texture and weathered character of Carlyle's face with unusual directness, giving the portrait an immediacy that sets it apart from more formal studio compositions. Elliott & Fry's copyright designation indicates this was an authorized portrait produced for commercial distribution.

Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) was the most formidable prose stylist and social critic in Victorian Britain, author of Sartor Resartus, The French Revolution, On Heroes and Hero-Worship, and the six-volume Frederick the Great. His concept of the Great Man theory of history and his fierce critiques of laissez-faire capitalism, democracy, and industrialism shaped Victorian intellectual discourse profoundly, influencing figures from John Stuart Mill and Ralph Waldo Emerson to Friedrich Nietzsche. A penciled inscription on the reverse reads Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881).

The reverse bears a penciled inscription reading Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) with the Elliott & Fry studio imprint and dealer code 10/02/14 / COLDEZ.
