Scarce and historically important carte de visite titled “Our Protection – Rosa, Charley, Rebecca. Slave Children from New Orleans.” The photograph depicts three formerly enslaved children who were brought North during the Civil War and widely photographed as part of abolitionist fundraising campaigns.

The reverse is printed “No. 9” and states the image was entered according to Act of Congress in 1864 by S. Tackenberry in the Southern District of New York. The text further explains that proceeds from the sale of the photographs were devoted to the education of formerly enslaved people in the Department of the Gulf under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks.

Photographer credit Chas. Paxson, New York. These “freed slave children” images are among the most powerful and widely circulated visual documents of the Civil War emancipation era. There is a crease in the image.
