Carte de visite studio portrait showing Confederate General James Fagan in uniform, posed standing in a plain studio setting. Fagan wears a double-breasted Confederate officer’s frock coat with prominent buttons, dark trousers, and holds his hat at his side. The image is a knees-up view, with a neutral painted backdrop typical of mid-war studio photography. The photograph is an albumen print mounted on standard CDV cardstock, consistent with Civil War-era production.

The identification is supported by period manuscript inscriptions. The recto bears a handwritten caption reading “Genl. Fagan, Arkansas,” and the verso is inscribed “Maj. Genl. Fagan, Arkansas,” indicating contemporary recognition of the sitter. James Fleming Fagan was a prominent Arkansas officer who commanded the 1st Arkansas Infantry and saw early action at Shiloh before later engagements including Prairie Grove. His career progressed through brigade and divisional command in the Trans-Mississippi Theater, making him one of the more recognizable Confederate generals from Arkansas.

No photographer’s imprint is visible on the mount. The overall presentation is straightforward and unadorned, focusing attention on the uniform and bearing of the officer. The dual manuscript identifications on recto and verso enhance the historical clarity of the image and firmly anchor it to Fagan’s Confederate service in Arkansas.
