Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Georges Raoul Eugène Pilotelle, known by his pseudonym Pilotell (1845–1918), was a caricaturist associated with the Paris Commune, and this albumen carte de visite portrait of him ranks among the most historically resonant products of the Reutlinger studio, an illustrious Paris photography dynasty renowned for portraits of celebrities, founded by Charles Reutlinger at 21 Boulevard Montmartre. The image dates to the late 1860s or very early 1870s, consistent with the studio's exhibition medal reverse, which references prizes through 1868, and with Pilotell's documented Paris years before his post-Commune exile.

The subject stands in a three-quarter pose against a plain tonal ground, wearing a dark sack coat over a buttoned waistcoat, with a loosely knotted cravat at the open collar. A decorative tassel hangs at his left hip, and a folded document or paper is tucked into his trouser pocket. His thick, wavy hair swept back and a trimmed mustache and chin beard complete a distinctly bohemian presentation.

Pilotell earned his living contributing caricatures to several satirical journals of the republican opposition, including Le Charivari and La Rue de Jules Vallès, and served as a special commissioner of the Commune before fleeing after the Bloody Week to Geneva, Brussels, The Hague, and ultimately London, where he rebuilt his career.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil "Pilotell / caricaturiste / Polieu" (Pilotell / caricaturist / Polieu) and bears the printed studio imprint: "Déposé / CH. REUTLINGER, PHOTO. / Garanti d'après nature" (Deposited / Ch. Reutlinger, Phot. / Guaranteed from life) on the face, with the verso displaying four exhibition medals for Paris 1867, Berlin 1866, and Hamburg 1868, beneath the legend "PREMIER PRIX / Exposition Universelle 1867 / CH. REUTLINGER / PHOTOGRAPHE / 21, Boulevard Montmartre, 21 / PARIS."
