Carte de visite portrait of Anpetu-Tokeca, also known as John Other Day (ca. 1819–1869), a Wahpeton Dakota leader notable for his pivotal role during the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862. Dressed in formal attire with a crisp white shirt and broad-lapelled coat, Other Day sits confidently with his wide-brimmed hat resting in hand. His direct gaze and dignified bearing convey a powerful presence. Identified in period pencil inscription along the lower margin.
Other Day is historically remembered for guiding over 60 settlers to safety at great personal risk during the 1862 conflict, later testifying before Congress and advocating for peace and Dakota rights. The verso features an ornate printed frame surrounding a 2-cent blue U.S. Revenue Proprietary stamp, indicating Civil War-era use.
A significant and scarce image of a Native leader who courageously straddled two worlds during one of the most turbulent chapters in Minnesota’s history.
