Scarce carte de visite of the famed “Table Rock” formation on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee, taken by renowned Civil War-era photographer R.M. Linn. The naturally flat-topped rock formation appears in sharp detail, framed by leafy branches and rugged stone outcroppings. “Table Rock” is handwritten in period ink along the lower margin of the mount.
The reverse is backmarked: “Photographed at Gallery, Point Lookout, Lookout Mountain, R.M. Linn, Proprietor,” with an American flag woodcut—an iconic imprint from one of the most prolific photographers documenting the aftermath of the Battle of Lookout Mountain and the surrounding Chattanooga area.
Images from Linn’s Point Lookout gallery are increasingly scarce, especially outdoor landscape views like this one.
