Albumen carte de visite portrait of an unidentified working man holding a walking stick, photographed by S. Piper, Manchester, New Hampshire, circa 1860s–1870s. The full-length studio portrait shows the man standing before a plain backdrop wearing a cap, well worn jacket, vest, and work trousers, and holding a heavy wooden walking stick or staff. The direct pose and utilitarian clothing suggest a laboring or working-class subject typical of small New England studio portraiture of the period.

The reverse bears the printed photographer’s imprint “S. Piper Photographer, Cor. Elm & Amherst Sts., Manchester, N.H.” A pencil note on the reverse reads “Walking stick.” The mount is otherwise unprinted.
