A cartes de visite featuring Native American Hole-in-the-Day (Bagone-giizhig), a prominent Ojibwa leader from Minnesota. Photographed by Charles A. Zimmerman of St. Paul, Minnesota, the image captures the essence of a man who played a pivotal role in the history of the Ojibwa people during the tumultuous times of the U.S.-Dakota War in 1862.

Hole-in-the-Day was a key figure in attempting to form an alliance with the Dakota Indians during the U.S.-Dakota War, demonstrating his influence and vision for unity among indigenous tribes. In 1867, he signed the final treaty that established the White Earth Reservation in northwestern Minnesota, solidifying his legacy as a leader who sought to secure land and rights for his people.

Tragically, Hole-in-the-Day's life was cut short when he was ambushed and killed near the current site of Fisherman’s Bridge off Gull Lake. This photograph is a poignant reminder of his leadership, resilience, and the turbulent era in which he lived.

The photograph is well-preserved and housed in its original cardstock mount. The verso bears the photographer's imprint.
