Albumen carte de visite portrait of Gioachino Antonio Rossini (1792–1868), after a well-known photographic portrait by Nadar, Paris, circa 1860s. The Italian composer is shown seated in a studio pose wearing a heavy coat and waistcoat. Rossini was one of the most influential opera composers of the early nineteenth century, best known for works including The Barber of Seville, William Tell, and numerous comic and serious operas that defined the bel canto style.
The image follows a widely circulated portrait made by the celebrated Paris photographer Nadar, whose studio at 35 Boulevard des Capucines became one of the most important portrait studios in Europe. Nadar photographed many major cultural figures of the period, and Rossini sat for several portraits late in life after retiring from opera composition in 1829.
The mount carries a red ruled border. The reverse bears manuscript identification reading "Gioacchino Antonio Rossini 1792–1868 Italian Composer" and "William Tell Overture 1829." Printed text reads "35, Boulevard des Capucines" and a retailer's stamp reads "Tresage Artistes Repositary Dublin."
