A highly unusual and intriguing Carte de Visite (CDV) featuring what is described as a “sea devil” or a mythical curiosity, discovered in Matanzas Inlet, Florida, purportedly linking fish and bird characteristics. The object appears taxidermied and stands upright with exaggerated features, fins, and wings, adding an air of wonder and mystery. A.E. Hill of Mt. Dora, Florida. Hill’s promotional text details his wide-ranging business in construction materials, stoves, plumbing, and glassware, illustrating 19th-century entrepreneurial versatility. Promoted as a connecting link between fish and bird, this “curiosity” was pronounced by “eminent doctors and naturalists” to be a unique specimen.
