A bearded man and a young child face one another in a lively exchange captured by the Dresden studio Hoffmann and Römler, operating at Prager-Strasse No. 6. The reverse imprint displays four Hamburg Photographic Society award medallions dated 1868, placing production in the late 1860s. Both subjects raise a single index finger toward one another, creating a rare moment of animated interaction within what was typically a rigid studio format.

The man sits on a turned-leg wooden stool wearing a dark frock coat, bow tie, and pale striped trousers with leather oxfords. The child stands facing him, dressed in a light smock-style jacket, pale trousers, and stout black ankle boots, with curly hair loosely gathered at the crown. A heavy draped textile curtain with a floral pattern anchors the left side of the composition, and a small dark wooden chest or box is partially visible between the two figures.

Hoffmann and Römler were an established Dresden photographic partnership whose award recognition at the 1868 Hamburg exhibitions reflected their standing among German studios of the period. The double-finger-pointing pose was an uncommon compositional choice, suggesting either a deliberate narrative arrangement by the photographer or a genuinely spontaneous moment preserved on albumen paper.

The reverse reads in red print: Hoffmann and Römler, Prager-Strasse No. 6, Dresden, with four circular medallion imprints citing Hamburg photographic awards, 1868.
