Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Louis Blanc (1811–1882), a French socialist journalist, historian, and politician, is depicted here in an albumen carte-de-visite produced by the distinguished London and Brighton studio of John Jabez Edwin Mayall. The three-quarter bust portrait presents Blanc in a relaxed yet direct pose, his gaze turned slightly from the lens, and the image carries the confident, naturalistic quality for which Mayall's studio was celebrated, having photographed Queen Victoria and members of the royal family and become famous for his cartes-de-visite. Blanc was in enforced residence in London until 1870, placing this portrait firmly within that long London exile and consistent with Mayall's active years operating simultaneously from his Regent Street and Brighton addresses.

Blanc appears as a middle-aged man with dark, full, loosely swept hair falling past the ears, a broad forehead marked by a distinctive natural part, and a firm, clean-shaven jaw. He wears a dark frock coat with visible fabric-covered buttons at the chest, an open collar, and a loosely knotted dark cravat at the throat, its ends falling across a white shirt front in an informal, slightly artistic manner characteristic of radical intellectual portraiture of the 1860s.

Blanc's most influential work, *Organisation du travail*, proposed state-financed cooperatives managed by workers to guarantee employment; during the 1848 Revolution he joined the provisional government and chaired the Commission of Government on Labour, but was ultimately exiled to England following the violent June Days uprising. Although his ideas of workers' cooperatives were never fully realized, his political and social ideas greatly contributed to the development of socialism in France.

The reverse bears the printed imprint "Mayall, 91, King's Road Brighton" and "224, Regent Street, London W," along with exhibition medal vignettes dated 1862, 1865, and 1867. Inscribed in pencil at the top of the reverse: "Louis Blanc / French Socialist & Writer." A large cursive signature reading "Louis Blanc" is written across the center of the reverse, with a catalog notation "LOABDR 6/6/06" in pencil below.
