Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A woman identified on the reverse as the Lady Superintendent of the Ambulance Chapter of the Siege of Paris, 1870 to 1871, is portrayed in this albumen carte-de-visite produced by E. Defonds at 9, Rue Duphot, Paris, near the Madeleine. The Siege of Paris ran from 19 September 1870 to 28 January 1871, when Prussian-led forces of the North German Confederation encircled and captured the city. Private residences, hotels, theaters, and government buildings were converted into ambulances and hospitals throughout the siege, and the Ambulance Chapter she superintended was among those organizations providing medical relief to the besieged population and wounded. E. Defonds operated at 9, Rue Duphot, Paris, placing this portrait squarely within the period of the siege or its immediate aftermath.

The subject sits in a carved wooden armchair and wears a dark cape over a white apron-front dress, with full white undersleeves visible at the cuffs. A white linen bonnet tied with a wide black ribbon bow frames her face, consistent with the dress of a nursing or charitable organization superintendent of the era. Her right hand is raised to her cheek in a contemplative pose, and her left hand rests in her lap holding a small dark book. A wicker basket and additional objects are visible on a side table to her right, against a draped studio backdrop.

The siege ran from September 1870 until January 1871, and the ambulance organizations that operated during it were credited for their organization, sanitary conditions, and medical care in contrast to many of the overwhelmed French-sponsored facilities. A woman holding a supervisory role over an ambulance chapter during this period would have occupied a position of genuine authority and public distinction.

Reverse bears the printed studio imprint "Photographie d'Art / E. Defonds / 9. Rue Duphot. Près la Madeleine. / Paris," along with a large ink signature and a pencil inscription reading "The Lady Superintendent of the Ambulance Chapter / Siege of Paris 1870–1871." A pencil catalog notation reading "7/19/12 L03172 Eb" appears in the upper right corner.
