English author and critic John Ruskin is portrayed in a close bust CDV issued as a copyright portrait from life by John G. Murdoch, Publisher, London, Edinburgh & Glasgow, presenting the art critic and social theorist in middle age in a direct frontal composition. Ruskin faces the camera with a composed and serious expression, his dark hair swept back, wearing a dark coat with a white shirt and loosely tied cravat visible at the throat. No photographer's studio imprint appears on the card, the Murdoch publisher's credit on the reverse indicating this was a commercially distributed portrait rather than a bespoke studio sitting.

The image is mounted on plain card stock with the elaborate red-printed Murdoch publisher's imprint on the reverse, which prominently identifies the subject by name and asserts copyright, a format used by Murdoch for authorized portrait series of British literary and cultural figures. The bust framing and direct gaze give the portrait a formal authority consistent with Ruskin's public standing as the leading aesthetic voice of Victorian Britain.

John Ruskin (1819–1900) was the most influential British art critic of the nineteenth century, champion of J.M.W. Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites, and author of Modern Painters, The Stones of Venice, and The Seven Lamps of Architecture. His later social writings, including Unto This Last, shaped the thinking of figures from Tolstoy to Gandhi and established him as a foundational voice of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The reverse bears the printed Murdoch publisher's credit with copyright designation and dealer code 2/04/15 / LOBEXZ / Eb.
