John D. Bemo, identified on the reverse as Tal-A-Mas-Mico, or King of the Forest, of Muskogee, Indian Territory, is the subject of this albumen carte-de-visite produced by Hilliard at 120 S. Second Street, Philadelphia. The bust-length studio portrait presents a man of commanding presence in a three-quarter pose, his gaze directed slightly off camera with a composed, direct expression. The format and studio attribution place the image comfortably within the 1860s to 1870s.

Bemo wears a wrapped turban-style headdress adorned with a tassel and braided cord, a broad cloth outer garment, and a heavily fringed sash or collar trimmed with a row of circular ornaments running diagonally across his chest. A knotted cravat and light-colored shirt collar are visible beneath the sash, combining Indigenous regalia with elements of contemporary dress.

John D. Bemo was a Seminole man of considerable prominence. Born around 1807, he was educated in Europe and later returned to work as a missionary and interpreter among the Seminole people in Indian Territory, where he was recognized as a leader of significant cultural and spiritual influence.
