Henri Rochefort, born Victor Henri de Rochefort-Luçay, was the polemical journalist and pamphleteer behind La Lanterne, Le Mot d’Ordre, and later L’Intransigeant, whose relentless attacks on Napoleon III made him one of the Second Empire’s most notorious opposition voices. This carte de visite was produced by André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri’s Paris studio at 8 Boulevard des Italiens, the firm credited with popularizing the carte de visite format itself.

Rochefort is seated, turned slightly from the camera with his hands loosely clasped and a folded card or paper held between them. He wears a dark frock coat with a wide satin-faced collar over a waistcoat and loosely knotted bow tie, his curling dark hair swept back from a high forehead, a thin mustache and chin beard framing his mouth. A stack of books rests on a table at his elbow.

Elected deputy for Paris in 1871, Rochefort openly supported the Commune in the pages of Le Mot d’Ordre, a stance that led to his arrest and deportation to the penal colony of New Caledonia in 1873. He escaped by sea the following year alongside fellow Communards, a flight that drew international press attention, and resumed his journalism from exile in Switzerland before returning to France under the 1880 amnesty.

The reverse is signed in red ink “Rochefort” over Disdéri’s printed studio monogram, with the address “Paris, 8 Boulevard des Italiens” printed vertically at left, and is further inscribed in pencil, “Victor Henri Rocheford, Marquis de Rocheford-Lucay (1838-1913), Prominent Journalist and opponent of Napoleon III,” with the archival notations “3/14/07,” “COLEXZ,” and “Eb.”
