Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A hand-colored CDV depicting a man in full theatrical costume, produced by the photography shop at Via Condotti 91, Rome, in the 1860s to 1870s. The image is albumen silver print on card mount, with applied hand-coloring throughout, a technique occasionally employed for theatrical and exhibition portraits of the period. No photographer's name appears on the mount, only the shop imprint.

The subject stands in a full-length pose beside a painted plinth and balustrade, wearing a vivid red doublet and matching knee breeches with decorative fringing at the lower leg, dark buckled shoes, and a broad white cravat at the collar. The hand-coloring extends to the floor, rendered in green to suggest a stage or garden ground, while the backdrop is painted a flat gray. The subject's expression is composed and direct, with shoulder-length dark hair swept back.

The mount imprint identifies the seller as a photography shop offering photographs, wash drawings, and modern paintings, operating from Via Condotti 91 in Rome, one of the city's most fashionable commercial streets near the Spanish Steps. The inscription in pencil on the reverse, in a contemporary hand, reads "Household Servants."

The reverse bears the printed shop imprint "Magasin de Photographies / Dessins au Lavis / Et Tableaux Modernes / Rome / Rue Condotti, 91" (Photography Shop / Wash Drawings / And Modern Paintings / Rome / Via Condotti, 91), with a pencil inscription below reading "Household Servants."
