Gustave Lefrançais, inscribed by name on the reverse, was a schoolteacher turned revolutionary who rose to become president of the Paris Commune’s governing council in its early days, elected by the 4th arrondissement on March 26, 1871. This carte de visite was produced by Etienne Carjat & Cie, Paris, at 10 Rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.

He appears in an oval vignette, bust length, head turned slightly from the camera with tousled dark hair brushed back and a full, untrimmed beard. He wears a dark coat with a velvet collar edged in braided trim over a waistcoat and narrow dark tie, a folded card or paper tucked into his waistcoat pocket.

Barred from teaching for his revolutionary views, Lefrançais spent much of the 1850s in exile in London before returning to Paris, where he went on to serve on the Commune’s executive, labor, and finance commissions. He fought on the barricades at the Bastille during the Bloody Week, escaped after the Commune’s fall, and spent the following decades in Swiss exile among anarchist circles before returning to France under the 1880 amnesty.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil, “Le Francais / Gustave Lefrançais (1826-1901) / Anarchist, Paris Commune,” over the printed studio imprint of Etienne Carjat & Cie, 10 Rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, Paris, with the archival notations “3/21/07,” “LOFGEZ,” and “Eb.”
