Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Gustave Doré (1832 to 1883), the French artist and illustrator of Dante, the Bible, and Don Quixote, is shown in profile in this carte de visite by Elliott & Fry of 55 & 56 Baker Street, London, circa 1870. Doré was a regular visitor to London from the late 1860s, when a gallery devoted to his paintings opened in New Bond Street, and the firm issued this portrait under copyright with his name printed on the mount. The albumen print is on a cream mount with rounded corners.

The bust length portrait turns him fully to the right in strict profile. His hair is swept back in thick waves over the ear, and he wears a full moustache with a clean shaven chin. A dark coat with broad notched lapels sits over a high white collar and a dark knotted tie, with a small pale ribbon bar pinned at the lapel.

London: A Pilgrimage, his collaboration with the journalist Blanchard Jerrold, appeared in 1872 with 180 engravings of the city. Elliott & Fry, founded in Baker Street in 1863, photographed many of the leading public figures of the period.

Printed below the image: Gustave Dore., Elliott & Fry, Copyright, 55 & 56, Baker St. London. W. Reverse printed with the royal arms and “Elliott and Fry, Photographers, 55 & 56, Baker Street, London W,” the mount by Marion, Imp. Paris. Inscribed in pencil, Dore.
