Four cartes de visites of the French artist Gustave Doré across multiple sittings, collectively spanning at least through September 1878 based on inscription. One reverse bears the imprint of Sarony's, 460 Broadway, New York, while another carries the printed imprint of Fairless and Beeforth, Doré Gallery, 35 New Bond Street, London. The remaining two are unmarked on the reverse. One mount front bears a handwritten inscription reading "Gustave Doré" in script.

Across the four images, Doré appears as a heavyset man with dark hair and a full mustache, shown variously in three-quarter and profile views. He wears a frock coat with a bow tie and lapel decoration in one image, a boldly checked suit with a pocket square in another, and a dark formal coat with white waistcoat and cravat in a third. The fourth shows him leaning against a patterned chair, his coat open and his posture relaxed.

Gustave Doré (1833-1883) was among the most celebrated French illustrators and painters of the nineteenth century, renowned for monumental biblical and literary illustrations and his association with the London Doré Gallery operated by Fairless and Beeforth.

Reverses include penciled inscriptions: "Gustave Doré" on two, "Gustave Doré (1833-83) French Painter & Book Illustrator" on the Sarony mount, and "Gustave Dorés Sept 1878" on the London mount.
