Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Georges Labadie Pilotell (1845–1918), born Georges Raoul Eugène Pilotelle, was one of the defining caricaturists of his era, and this albumen carte de visite, made in the Paris studio of Pierre Petit, captures him in a full-length seated pose that projects the confident bearing of an artist at the height of his Parisian years. The front mount bears the printed imprint "PIERRE PETIT, Phot." The verso carries the elaborate trade stamp of Ch. Reutlinger, Photographe, 21 Boulevard Montmartre, Paris, which dates the mount to the period following Reutlinger's First Prize at the Exposition Universelle of 1867, a date consistent with Pilotell's known activity in Paris before the Commune of 1871.

Pilotell is shown seated in a carved studio chair, his legs apart and his gaze turned to the left of the frame. He wears a voluminous dark overcoat thrown open over a white open-collar shirt, light trousers, and leather ankle boots. A walking stick is held in his right hand, and his left hand rests at his waist, closed. His full beard, swept-back dark hair, and relaxed posture give the portrait a deliberately informal, bohemian quality at odds with the stiff formality common to the period's celebrity cartes.

Born in Poitiers into a bourgeois family, Pilotell came to Paris and built his career contributing caricatures to the republican opposition press. In February 1871 he launched his own paper, La Caricature Politique, and was subsequently named a special commissioner of the Paris Commune. After the Commune's fall he fled into exile, eventually settling in London, where he drew for fashion journals and produced portraits of figures including Benjamin Disraeli and Queen Victoria.

Inscribed in pencil on the verso: "George Labadie Pilotell / French Artist." Additional notations on the verso read "3/02/07," "LDAEB2," and "Eb."
