General Winfield Scott occupies the center of this albumen CDV, seated in a klismos-style wooden chair on what appears to be a covered porch before a brick wall, captured from a photographic negative in Mathew Brady's National Portrait Gallery and published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. The image dates to the early 1860s, when Scott was in his mid-to-late seventies, and presents him in a full-length pose of considerable gravity.

Scott wears his heavily decorated full-dress uniform coat with large bullion epaulets on both shoulders, embroidered sleeve trim, and a double row of buttons down the front. His white hair and side whiskers are visible, his gaze directed upward and to his left with a composed, distant expression. Both hands grip the ornate hilt and upper blade of a dress sword, its point resting on the porch floor between his feet, and his black leather shoes are visible beneath crossed legs.

Winfield Scott, known by the nickname "Old Fuss and Feathers," was General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army from 1841 to 1861 and the architect of the Anaconda Plan at the outset of the Civil War. His career spanned five decades and included celebrated command in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and numerous frontier campaigns, making him one of the most consequential military figures in American history.

The reverse is printed in blue ink: "Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. From Photographic Negative, from Brady's National Portrait Gallery." A penciled notation reading "$100.00" appears at the lower left of the reverse. The mount is trimmed.
