Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Félix Pyat (1810–1889) was a French socialist journalist, playwright, and politician, and one of the most prominent figures of the Paris Commune. He is depicted here in a bust-length CDV portrait produced by Franck, the pseudonym of François-Marie-Louis-Alexandre Gobinet de Villecholles, who operated a celebrated studio on the Rue Vivienne from 1861 to 1880. The reverse imprint lists exhibition medals awarded in France, Portugal, Sweden, Italy, Rome, and Athens between 1852 and 1867, situating the card within Franck's most active and decorated period.

Pyat is shown in a close vignette composition against a plain ground, wearing a dark frock coat with a visible button at the lapel and a loosely knotted cravat at the throat. His hair is swept back in tight curls above each ear, and he wears a full, dense beard with a clean-shaved upper lip, giving him a distinctive leonine appearance. His gaze is directed slightly upward and to one side, conveying the watchful bearing characteristic of portraits of public intellectuals of the period.

Pyat passed the Paris bar in 1831 but never practiced law, channeling his energies entirely into journalism; during the 1830s and 1840s he built a reputation as a journalist, critic, and playwright, and his politics took on an increasingly anti-monarchist and pro-socialist character. During the Revolution of 1848, Pyat served as a commissioner of the provisional government and as a deputy of the Constituent and subsequently the Legislative Assembly. He later became one of the commanding voices of the Paris Commune of 1871.

The reverse bears the printed studio imprint "PHOTOGRAPHIE FRANCK, MÉDAILLES, RUE VIVIENNE 18, AU DEUXIÈME ÉTAGE, PARIS" (Photography Franck, Medals, 18 Rue Vivienne, Second Floor, Paris), with institutional seals for the École Polytechnique, Saint-Cyr, and the École Centrale, and the printed notation "Les clichés sont conservés" (The negatives are retained). A manuscript signature in ink reads "Félix Pyat."
