Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Eugène Dupont served as Secretary of the International Workingmen's Association General Council for France, and this carte de visite captures him in a three-quarter-length studio portrait, attributed to Ch. Reutlinger of Paris. The front mount bears the imprint "CH. REUTLINGER, PHOT." at the top border. Reutlinger Studios was one of the most prominent Parisian photographic establishments, and the studio became famous for its portraits of the artists, musicians, and notable personalities of the period. The reverse carries the imprint of E. Appert, peintre photographe, 24 Rue Taitbout, Paris, suggesting the mount was a stock card repurposed or redistributed through a second studio.

Dupont is shown in a loosely draped double-breasted frock coat with wide lapels and patch pockets, his curly dark hair full and unrestrained, and a full mustache anchoring a direct, composed expression. He rests crossed forearms atop the disc of an ornamental bronze figural stand, a sculpted female figure forming its base, and holds a cigar or short implement lightly in one hand. The neutral graduated backdrop is consistent with Reutlinger's studio practice of the 1860s to 1870s.

Dupont was among the French representatives active in the founding committee of the International Workingmen's Association alongside figures including Tolain, Charles Limousin, and Karl Marx. The reverse inscription identifies the subject as "Eugène Dupont (1830–1902), Secretary of International Working Men's Association (Gen. Council of France during Paris Commune."

The reverse carries the printed imprint of E. Appert, Peintre Photographe de S.M. la Reine d'Espagne de S.A.I. le Grand Duc Constantin, 24, Rue Taitbout, 24, au 1er Étage, ci-devant 21, Rue Louis le Grand, Paris, Photographe de la Magistrature, with four silver medal medallions dated 1853, 1855, 1859, and 1867 (Appended translation: Painter Photographer to H.M. the Queen of Spain and H.I.H. the Grand Duke Constantine, 24 Rue Taitbout, first floor, formerly 21 Rue Louis le Grand, Paris, Photographer to the Magistracy). Inscribed in pencil at top: "Dupont" (surname only, in a florid hand), below in a second hand: "Eugène Dupont (1830–1902) / Secretary of International Working Men's Association (Gen. Council / of France during Paris Commune." A further pencil notation at bottom reads: "J. DUPONT 1830–1902 / 7/10/07 DOLAFB/ + Eb."
