Corporal H. W. Sweet of Company A poses in this Civil War-era CDV, identified by a period ink inscription on the reverse as an Iowa soldier. The format and ornate printed mount border are consistent with carte-de-visite production of the 1861 to 1865 period, and no photographer's imprint is visible on either side of the card.

Sweet wears a dark, single-breasted military frock coat with a standing collar and a row of small buttons running from throat to waist, consistent with Union infantry enlisted dress. His full beard is dark and well-grown, his dark hair parted and swept to the side, and his direct, steady gaze fills the oval vignette. The image is set within an elaborately printed decorative border featuring scrollwork, tassel motifs, and floral ornament.

Iowa contributed more than 76,000 men to the Union cause, organized into numerous infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments. Company A designations appeared across many Iowa regiments, and the inscription placing Sweet in "A. Co." connects him to that broader record of service, though the specific regiment is not named on the card.

The reverse bears a period cursive inscription reading: "Corporal / H. W. Sweet / 'A.' Co."
