Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Angelina Condoni is identified by inscription on the reverse of this albumen carte-de-visite, produced at the Paris studio of E. Appert. Appert established his workshop at 24 rue Taitbout in 1868, and the mount's printed imprint, listing his silver medals from 1853, 1855, 1859, and 1867 and citing his appointment as photographer to the Corps Législatif and to the Magistrature, and court expert near the Tribunal de la Seine, places this card firmly within his active period at that address, dating it to the late 1860s or early 1870s.

The subject is shown in three-quarter view, wearing a dark jacket with elaborate embroidered passementerie across the bodice and sleeves. A multi-strand bead necklace encircles her throat, and matching drop earrings hang beneath a netted lace headdress set over a high-swept pompadour. She holds a folded white cloth or handkerchief loosely in both hands, a ring visible on one finger, her gaze directed slightly away from the lens.

The Appert brothers specialized in portrait photography of political figures, and Ernest-Charles was among the earliest practitioners of photomontage, but their studio at 24 rue Taitbout served a broad Parisian clientele, and this portrait reflects the polished, formally accessorized studio work for which the house was recognized. The embroidered costume and layered jewelry suggest a subject of social standing or regional costumed dress.

The reverse bears two manuscript inscriptions of the sitter's name, "angelina condoni" in pencil at the top and "Angelina Condomi" in ink at the bottom, along with the printed studio imprint of E. Appert, Peintre Photographe, 24 Rue Taitbout, Paris, and the notice "Reproduction interdite" (Reproduction prohibited) on the face below the image.
