Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Alexandre Glais-Bizoin (1800–1877) was a prominent French republican politician active during the July Monarchy, portrayed here in a carte de visite albumen print. The front mount bears the imprint of photographer E. Gatel at 173, Palais Royal, while the reverse carries the studio imprint of Photographie Thiébault, Bacard Fils, Gendre & Successeur, at 31 Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle, Paris, suggesting the image was either reprinted or distributed through that studio. Paul Bacard, the son-in-law of Eugène Thiébault, operated at Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle and signed photographs under the "Photographie Thiébault – Bacard fils, successeur" imprint beginning in 1868.

The subject is shown in a vignette oval format, wearing a dark frock coat layered beneath a heavy textured overcoat with wide lapels, a loose cravat, and an open shirt collar. His long, curling brown hair falls past his ears, and a full, unkempt beard and mustache lend him a distinctly bohemian character. His gaze is directed slightly off-camera with a composed and serious expression.

Glais-Bizoin was elected to the National Assembly from Loudéac in 1831 and was repeatedly reelected through the entire reign of Louis Philippe, consistently aligning with the republican far left. He later served as minister without portfolio in the Government of National Defense beginning September 4, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil at the upper edge as "Blais-Bizoin, / Alexandre" (the subject's name as written by a later hand, rendering the surname phonetically). The studio imprint reads: "PHOTOGRAPHIE THIÉBAULT / 31 Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle, 31 / en face le Théâtre du Gymnase / BACARD FILS / GENDRE & SUCCESSEUR" (Photography Thiébault / 31 Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle, 31 / across from the Théâtre du Gymnase / Bacard Fils / Son-in-law & Successor). The reverse also bears the notation "10/03/07 DOLBBZ Eb."
