Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Adolphe Thiers, statesman, journalist, and historian, served as the first president of the French Third Republic from 1871 to 1873, and this albumen carte-de-visite portrait captures him with the gravitas that distinguished one of the nineteenth century's most consequential political figures. The image was produced by Charles Reutlinger at his celebrated studio at 21, Boulevard Montmartre, Paris, winner of the Premier Prix at the Exposition Universelle of 1867. The back mark's award medallions, citing Paris 1867, Berlin 1866, and Hamburg 1866, date the card to the late 1860s, consistent with Thiers's appearance as an older man.

Thiers is depicted in a close three-quarter bust, his broad face framed by thin white hair swept back from a high forehead. He wears wire-rimmed oval spectacles low on his nose, a dark cravat tied at the collar, a white shirt front, and a dark double-breasted frock coat with a visible button at the lapel. His expression is composed and direct, conveying the characteristic authority of a seasoned parliamentary figure.

Thiers suppressed the Paris Commune insurrection and is remembered equally for his major historical works, including his histories of the French Revolution and the Consulate and Empire, which shaped French national memory. Reutlinger photographed many of the best-known artists, scientists, musicians, and writers of his time, and Thiers was precisely the category of distinguished public figure the studio prized as a subject.

The verso bears the printed imprint "CH. REUTLINGER PHOT." with the legend "Déposé" at lower left and "Garanti d'après nature" at lower right, surmounted by an elaborate engraved trophy of award medals. Below the studio address, the name "Thiers" appears in ink in a period cursive hand.
