Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Court of the Lions at the Alhambra in Granada is the subject of this carbon print by Adolphe Braun, taken from a raised vantage across the courtyard toward the domed eastern pavilion. Braun learned the carbon process developed by Joseph Wilson Swan and used it extensively, valuing it for a permanence that albumen prints could not match. The print has the rich, even tones characteristic of that process.

At the center, twelve carved lions ring the base of the fountain, beneath a broad basin and a smaller upper bowl with a stepped finial. Slender marble columns, single and paired, carry arcades of pierced stucco, while a tiled dome and pyramidal roofs rise above the pavilion. At right, an upper story with arched window openings overlooks walkways radiating from the fountain.

The courtyard lies at the heart of the Nasrid palaces, surrounded by arcades set on 124 slender marble columns. Its four channels converge on the fountain, whose lions serve as water spouts.

Mounted on the original card with a paper label inscribed in ink "Espagne = Grenade = Alhambra" (Spain, Granada, Alhambra). Print approximately 8 5/8 x 11 inches; mount approximately 15 3/4 x 19 7/8 inches.
