Albumen stereograph depicting an interior courtyard view of the Yamun of the Allied Commissioners in Canton (Guangzhou), China. This unusual stereo images show a formal architectural complex with tiled roofs, covered walkways, railings, and a small bridge spanning a water feature, with multiple figures positioned throughout the scene. The composition emphasizes spatial depth and architectural order, intended for stereoscopic viewing.

This view is from the well-known Views in China series, with the printed mount identifying the subject as “View in the Yamun of the Allied Commissioners,” Canton, and numbered “81.” The Yamun served as an administrative compound associated with foreign diplomatic and governmental presence during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, reflecting the period of treaty-port governance and international oversight following the Opium Wars.

The image provides a rare visual record of Qing-era official architecture and daily activity within a restricted administrative setting, combining ethnographic, political, and architectural significance. Such stereoviews were produced for Western audiences seeking immersive views of East Asia and remain important documentary artifacts of nineteenth-century Sino-Western contact.
