Cabinet card portrait measuring 6" x 4 1/4" of a young woman posed in a studio interior beside a handheld stereoscope viewer. The sitter wears a dark dress with puffed sleeves and ruffled trim and faces the camera in a formal composition. Mount and dress suggest a date in the late 1880s to early 1890s.

The stereoscope is a Holmes-type handheld viewer used to examine stereoview photographs, one of the most popular forms of home entertainment and visual education in the nineteenth century. Portraits incorporating stereoscopic equipment are uncommon and reflect the widespread cultural importance of stereoscopic photography during the period.

Photograph mounted on a dark gray card with embossed oval border. No photographer’s imprint visible.
