Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Sleeping boy is the focus of this cabinet card, a carefully arranged studio study made about 1875 by Dr. Hermann Heid (1834 to 1891), the German born photographer active in Austria. Heid was known for producing figure studies intended for painters and sculptors, and his photographs are recognized for their refined compositions and careful attention to pose and light. This intimate image is an excellent example of that work, capturing the quiet stillness of childhood with remarkable sensitivity.

The young child is shown asleep on a cushioned surface with head resting gently on folded arms. Soft studio lighting models the face and curls of the hair, while the relaxed posture and draped fabric create a balanced composition. The plain background directs full attention to the child, emphasizing the serene expression and sculptural quality of the pose.

Dr. Hermann Heid built a reputation for photographic studies used as artistic references during the late nineteenth century. His work has often been confused with similar academic studies produced by Igout, yet Heid's photographs remain distinctive for their restrained elegance and their appeal to both collectors of early photography and students of nineteenth century academic art.

The mount is titled "Studie - Etude" on the recto. No photographer's imprint is noted.
