Cabinet card portrait of Washakie, the renowned chief of the Eastern Shoshone, photographed by M. D. Houghton of Rawlins, Wyoming. Washakie is seated and gazes directly at the camera, exuding quiet dignity and strength. He wears a patterned shirt adorned with a large shell gorget, and a finely beaded baldric decorated with symbolic imagery of tipis and pine trees. Draped across his shoulder is a bold, geometric trade blanket, and in his hand he holds a long pipe, signifying his status and authority. Washakie (ca. 1798–1900) was among the most respected Native American leaders of the 19th century, known for his wisdom, diplomacy, and efforts to secure peace and land rights for his people. As a military leader, he allied with the U.S. Army against common enemies and later negotiated the 1868 Fort Bridger Treaty, which established the Wind River Reservation. Houghton’s portrait is among the most iconic late-life images of Washakie, capturing the legacy of a man who bridged two worlds during a time of profound upheaval. His long life and enduring leadership left a lasting impact on the history of the American West.
