An occupational cabinet card of two unidentified painters using Sherwin-Williams paint posed with their trade tools and paint cans in this exceptional occupational portrait by Lewis of Eureka, Kansas. The reverse inscribed in manuscript "Sherwin Williams Painters, Eureka, Kansas." The image is an unusually specific and visually complete trade portrait in the cabinet card format, with the Sherwin-Williams product numbers clearly legible on the cans arranged in the foreground, and the elaborate painted decorative work visible on the shutters and walls behind them serving as direct evidence of the men's craft.

The man at left sits on the rungs of a wooden ladder, a cigarette in his mouth and a paint bucket in his hand, wearing paint-splattered overalls, suspenders, a bow tie, and a folded paper painter's cap. The man at right sits on a flat surface holding a brush and a color card or sample sheet, wearing a striped shirt, apron, and paper cap. Four Sherwin-Williams paint cans with printed labels and product numbers 155, 352, and 357 are arranged prominently on the floor at left, and an additional can sits on the surface at right. The background shows louvered shutters and elaborately painted decorative wall panels with floral and figural motifs that appear to be examples of the painters' own decorative work.

Sherwin-Williams was founded in Cleveland in 1866 and by the 1890s had established a national distribution network selling ready-mixed paints to professional painters and decorators across the country, replacing the traditional practice of mixing paint on site. The reverse bears the manuscript inscription "Sherwin Williams Painters, Eureka, Kansas" and the notation "7/28/06, ODBADA, Eb" in pencil at the lower edge.
