Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Rue Royale, running between the Place de la Concorde and the Church of the Madeleine, was among the most dramatically devastated streets in Paris during the Commune of 1871. This albumen silver print, mounted on cabinet card stock with a thin blue-ruled border, documents the street's gutted left-bank façades in the immediate aftermath of Bloody Week, with the Madeleine's neoclassical colonnade visible at the far right end of the avenue. No photographer's imprint appears on the mount.

The foreground is dominated by a long row of fire-ravaged building shells, their floors collapsed inward and exterior walls stripped to bare rubble and hanging plaster, with debris mounded along the sidewalk. At mid-distance, intact Haussmann-era apartment buildings survive on the right side of the street, one bearing a large wall-posted advertisement legible as "Maison Rue du Pont-Neuf." A horse-drawn enclosed carriage stands at the right edge of the frame, and the broad, empty roadway stretches deep into the composition, emphasizing the scale of the destruction.

Photography of the Rue Royale ruins concentrated on the days immediately following May 24, 1871, when desperate fighting had raged through the night in the Place de la Concorde and along the street itself. Numerous photographic albums were published as early as 1871, responding to and stoking intense public curiosity about the ruins. The cabinet card format and the state of the street suggest this print dates from the summer of 1871, before significant clearance work had begun.

Inscribed in pencil on the reverse "Rue Royale" ("Royal Street") and in ink with the initials "J.D." Additional penciled notations read "6 of 10," "10/13/07," "A0CBD†," and "Eb."
