A regimental memorial cross erected in memory of Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry soldiers lost in the torpedoing of the RMS Leinster on October 10, 1918, is the subject of this albumen cabinet card by W. McCrae of 14 and 15 Berkeley Road, Dublin, photographed almost certainly at Grangegorman Military Cemetery where many Leinster victims were interred. The RMS Leinster, a Royal Mail steamer operated by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company, was torpedoed by German submarine UB-123 while bound from Kingstown to Holyhead, killing at least 564 people and making the sinking the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea. The monument was made by Farrell and Son of Glasnevin, whose maker's mark is visible at the lower right of the base.

The Portland stone Latin cross rises from a three-tiered rectangular plinth, with a carved floral or regimental badge at the intersection of the cross arms. The upper panel inscription reads "Sacred to the Memory of the following Warrant Officer, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the 2/1 Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry, who lost their lives through the torpedoing of the RMS Leinster on the 10th October 1918." The lower panel names S.S.M. Hullay F., S.Q.M.S. Mildred V.L., and Privates Ball T.C., Barlow H.S., Bowers J., Hustwith I.J., Mulholland G., Sheldon J., and Sumner A. A wooden cross marker for Gunner E. Hayes R.G.A. is visible to the right of the memorial.

The sinking occurred just five weeks before the Armistice, with over 770 people aboard including crew, civilians, military personnel, and postal sorters, making it one of the war's most devastating single maritime losses. The monument and this photograph together constitute a rare primary document of regimental mourning for one of the First World War's forgotten disasters.
