Ralph Waldo Emerson is portrayed in a commanding full seated portrait cabinet card by Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, London, and at 7 Gloucester Terrace, S.W., showing the American essayist and philosopher during his 1872–73 visit to England in one of the most expansive photographic portraits made of him. Emerson sits in a carved wooden chair facing three-quarters toward the camera, holding a sheaf of papers in his left hand while his right arm extends to a side table bearing an ornate inkwell and quill stand. He wears a dark frock coat and waistcoat with a white shirt and large black bow tie, his thin white hair combed neatly back from his high forehead, and his expression is alert and pleasantly direct. Books and papers are arranged on the table behind him, reinforcing the literary context of the composition. The Elliott & Fry studio imprint and copyright credit appear on the front mount below the image.

The full-length seated format with writing desk and implements is among the most elaborate studio presentations made of Emerson and was produced during his celebrated European tour undertaken partly to recover from the effects of a fire at his Concord home in 1872. The reverse bears the full green-printed Elliott & Fry imprint with the royal arms and a penciled notation reading Emerson at the top.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was the defining voice of American Transcendentalism and the most influential American essayist and lecturer of the nineteenth century, author of Nature (1836), Self-Reliance, The American Scholar, and Representative Men (1850). His ideas on individualism, the over-soul, and the relationship between the mind and nature shaped American intellectual culture profoundly and influenced thinkers from Thoreau and Whitman to Nietzsche and William James.

The reverse bears the full Elliott & Fry studio imprint at 55 Baker Street and 7 Gloucester Terrace, London, a penciled notation reading Emerson, and dealer code 11/25/09 / LODECY / Eb.
