Prof. Maurettus, an unidentified ventriloquist, is depicted in this large-format composite albumen promotional photograph assembled from multiple separate studio images mounted together on a single card. A draped banner visible in the central image reads "Prof. Maurettus / Troublesom[e]" — the latter word likely the name of a featured dummy. The reverse bears a partially legible penciled inscription reading "with Oregon [Indian?] Medicine Co. / C[?] / Col[umbia?]," suggesting the performer traveled with a medicine show circuit. No studio imprint appears on the card.

The composite brings together at least seven distinct photographs. The central image shows Maurettus seated in formal evening dress with white bow tie and boutonniere, flanked by two ventriloquist dummies — one a dark-suited boy figure and one a spectacled character — with a display of additional carved puppet heads arranged on a draped table behind him. Surrounding this central portrait are inset images showing the performer in costume as at least three different ethnic or theatrical character types, including robed figures with exaggerated facial expressions and gestures. A close-up portrait of the performer in ordinary dress appears at lower left.

Composite promotional cabinet cards assembling multiple images of a single performer in varied roles were a standard tool of the late nineteenth-century entertainment trade, used by magicians, ventriloquists, and variety performers to circulate their range of characters to venue bookers and audiences. The medicine show association indicated by the reverse inscription places Maurettus within the tradition of traveling entertainers who accompanied patent medicine companies across rural American circuits in the 1880s and 1890s.
