Prince Bendon, the Glasgow ventriloquist William John Bendon, stands alongside his life-size mechanical walking figure in this full-length cabinet card produced by Pearlmann of St. George's Cross, Glasgow. Both subjects are dressed in matching formal evening wear, making this one of the more striking ventriloquist promotional portraits in the cabinet card format.
Bendon stands at right in a black tailcoat with white waistcoat, white cravat, and a decorative medal or badge at his lapel, holding a bowler hat at his side. The walking mechanical figure at left is dressed identically, its smooth mask-like face with hinged jaw mechanism and visible joint lines distinguishing it from its operator. Both figures hold bowler hats, their free arms interlocked at the elbow in a companionable pose before a painted interior backdrop.
Bendon toured Scottish concert halls and music halls from the 1880s onward, appearing on programmes with performers including Harry Lauder, and became noted for constructing his own mechanical figures capable of winking and smoking cigarettes. He later introduced film exhibition to his concert programmes in 1897, eventually establishing the first film renting company in Scotland and founding the Glasgow Cinema Club in 1919, serving as its first president.
