Cabinet card portrait of Washakie, the renowned leader of the Eastern Shoshone, taken by the photographic partnership of Charles W. Baker and Elias A. Johnston, who operated studios in Evanston and Rock Springs, Wyoming, during the late 19th century. The bust-length image presents Washakie in later life, his long hair parted in the center and flowing past his shoulders, wearing a dark jacket over a light shirt with a knotted neckerchief. His expression is solemn and dignified, embodying both his stature as a statesman and his endurance as a leader during decades of political and cultural upheaval for his people.

The reverse is inscribed in period hand, “Washakie, Chief Shoshone Indians,” confirming the sitter’s identity. Washakie (circa 1804–1900) was celebrated for his skill as a diplomat, warrior, and peacemaker, maintaining strategic alliances with the United States while securing the Wind River Reservation for the Eastern Shoshone in 1868. He is remembered as one of the few Native leaders to die of natural causes in this era, reportedly living to nearly a century.

Baker & Johnston were known for producing a significant body of portraits of Native leaders, often in collaboration with military and government officials in Wyoming Territory. This image of Washakie stands among the most enduring and frequently reproduced likenesses of the chief, offering both a personal and historical record of one of the most prominent Native American figures of the 19th century.
