We are pleased to present our Winter Photography Auction, opening January 31 at 1:00 PM Eastern, featuring approximately 270 individual lots spanning the full breadth of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography’s formative century.

Cabinet card albumen photograph depicting an armed Native American man shown full length in a studio setting. The sitter is posed in profile, holding a bow and arrows, and wearing a feather war bonnet, fringed garments, leggings, and moccasins. The backdrop presents a staged outdoor landscape with rocks and distant scenery, consistent with studio compositions of the period rather than an on location field photograph. The mount bears the printed series title and credit, “ARIZONA ILLUSTRATED / BY H. BUEHMAN / TUCSON, ARIZ.”

The photograph was produced by Henry Buehman, an important early photographer active in Tucson during the territorial period. Buehman’s “Arizona Illustrated” series comprised commercially issued images intended for tourists, collectors, and eastern markets, presenting views and figures associated with the American Southwest. Native American subjects within this series were often posed to emphasize martial or ceremonial imagery, reflecting contemporary visual conventions rather than documentary specificity. No tribal affiliation or personal identification is provided on the mount, and the sitter remains unidentified.

The card is a standard cabinet format with printed mount text only. No additional captions, manuscript notes, or photographer’s marks are visible beyond the series and studio identification.
