Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Place de la Bastille was left in a devastated state following the presence of Communard artillery batteries and the attempt to destroy the Colonne de Juillet by exploding a petroleum-filled barge in the Canal Saint-Martin tunnel. This cabinet card preserves an albumen silver print of the resulting destruction, almost certainly made in the weeks immediately following the suppression of the Commune in late May 1871, when a small army of photographers dusted off their equipment and returned to the streets to document the ruins. No photographer's imprint appears on the mount.

The image depicts a row of multi-story Haussmann-era buildings with their facades entirely stripped away, exposing interior floors, timber framing, collapsed balconies, and bare party walls. A tall isolated chimney stack stands intact at center-right amid the wreckage, while the foreground is consumed by a mound of rubble, splintered timber, broken masonry, and what appears to be a tarpaulin draped over debris at left. A painted commercial sign reading "Photographie" is partially visible on the far left building face, an ironic detail given the medium. The pale albumen tones lend the scene a bleached, almost spectral stillness.

Images of Paris in ruins were among the most commercially sought-after products of the post-Commune period, and a brisk trade sprang up in individual photographs and albums documenting the events of 1871. The buildings shown were likely struck by Versaillais artillery fire, and the photograph records the corner of the Rue de la Bastille and the Boulevard Beaumarchais.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil "Place de la Bastille" ("Place de la Bastille") with the initials "J.D." below. Additional notations at the bottom read "10 of 10 / 10/13/07 / A0CBD× / Eb," indicating this card was part of a ten-piece collection catalogued in October 2007.
