Raw, rare, and unforgettable—this is 19th- and early 20th-century photography at its best. Vernacular portraits, Native American warriors, African American resilience, Mormon pioneers, Western frontier families, and stark post-mortem scenes. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, and cabinet cards that capture real life without filters. Every image tells a story of survival, pride, and change. A museum-worthy collection for those who know real American history when they see it.

This charming late 19th-century cabinet card captures a prize Angora cat named “Foxy” in a professional studio portrait taken by C.H. Gallup & Co. of Poughkeepsie, New York. The cat is shown reclining in full fluff and dignity atop a draped stand inscribed “Angora Cat. Foxy.” The image is crisp and well-lit, clearly the result of practiced studio work.

The back of the card features an elaborate printed endorsement extolling both the talents of Foxy — who could “shake hands, roll over” and was “very fond of attention from his friends” — and the studio’s own photographic excellence. Gallup goes on to cite this image as evidence of the studio's ability to capture even the most timid animals with clarity and expression. There’s a bit of early advertising flair here too — a claim of being awarded the only medal ever given by the Dutchess County Agricultural Society for photographic work.

An outstanding crossover piece of pet portraiture, 19th-century advertising, and photographic history. Few animal cabinet cards come with this level of personality, promotion, and printed documentation. A great addition to any collection of animal photography, early studio advertising, or Victorian curiosities.
