Three figures identified by curators at the National Museum of the American Indian as probably Osage, certainly Eastern Plains, are portrayed in this cabinet card by S.A. Shepard, Photographer. The two adult men and a boy are posed before a painted studio backdrop with artificial grass underfoot, a setting the NMAI's Photo Archives identified as consistent with a studio in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The heart-shaped motif visible on the neck pieces worn by both men belongs to a named Oklahoma society, according to the same curatorial correspondence.

The seated central figure wears a wide-brimmed woven straw hat, a heavily studded dark vest over a full white ribbon shirt, and a fringed plaid blanket draped across the lap, with beaded moccasins visible beneath. The standing man at right wears a dark suit coat over a ribbon shirt and prominent ear ornaments, while the boy at left is dressed in a buttoned jacket and a forage-style cap, standing barefoot on the artificial grass. All three share a strong facial resemblance, noted by NMAI curators.

Ribbon shirts worn by both men represent an early documented example of a garment form that remains widely worn among Native Americans today. The NMAI Photo Archives correspondence identifies the three figures as likely related based on shared facial features, and situates the image within the broader context of late nineteenth-century assimilation-era portraiture in Indian Territory.

The reverse bears a purple rubber stamp reading "S.A. Shepard, Photographer." A 2009 email from Lou Stancari of the National Museum of the American Indian Photo Archives accompanies the lot and provided the curatorial identification noted above.
