Raw, rare, and unforgettable—this is 19th- and early 20th-century photography at its best. Vernacular portraits, Native American warriors, African American resilience, Mormon pioneers, Western frontier families, and stark post-mortem scenes. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, and cabinet cards that capture real life without filters. Every image tells a story of survival, pride, and change. A museum-worthy collection for those who know real American history when they see it.

Full-length cabinet card portrait of a well-dressed African American man posed beside a heavily textured faux tree trunk with carved-out birdhouses. His right hand rests on the tree while a soft cap or hat lies at his feet. He wears a long, double-breasted coat and gazes directly at the camera. Excellent detail in the backdrop and studio setting.

The reverse features a rare and ornate backmark for Geo. Schuwirth, 423 E. Pecan (6th Street), Austin, Texas, with a vignette of a cherub resting on a shield and early daguerreotype-style box camera under a radiating star. Duplicates of this image were offered at the time, as noted in the imprint.

George Schuwirth operated in Austin in the 1880s–1890s and is not commonly encountered. African American subjects from Texas, especially with strong backmarks, are extremely scarce.
