Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Napoleon III went into exile in England following his release by Bismarck, settling with Empress Eugénie, their son, and an entourage at Camden Place in Chislehurst, Kent. This large-format albumen cabinet card documents the deposed emperor in the garden of that residence on September 2, 1871, exactly one year to the day after his surrender at Sedan. The photograph is unattributed, with no photographer's imprint visible on the mount.

The scene unfolds across the formal garden in front of the neoclassical two-story country house, its pediment and tall French windows visible through mature deciduous trees. At center, two frock-coated civilian figures stand in conversation; a third civilian stands apart to their left. Flanking the group on both sides are uniformed military attendants, several bearing swords and spiked helmets, with a small party of officers seated at right. A shallow oval garden pond with aquatic plants occupies the foreground, and a uniformed sentry is visible on the house terrace in the background.

Napoleon III was taken prisoner by the Prussians at Sedan on September 1, 1870, after which the Second Empire fell and was replaced by the Third Republic; he was held at Wilhelmshöhe Castle in Westphalia until March 1871, then permitted to join Empress Eugénie and their son at Camden Place in Chislehurst. He was by this period increasingly ill from kidney and bladder stones, suffering persistent pain. The photograph is a rare outdoor group record of the imperial household during its English exile, made less than sixteen months before the emperor's death in January 1873.

The reverse is inscribed in ink "Louis Napoleon" at the top and "Lisbon, Sept 2nd, 1871" at the bottom, with penciled notations "2-3-48," "30-," and "1+5i." The inscription "Lisbon" appears to be a collector or dealer error; Camden Place, Chislehurst is the established location of Napoleon III's exile at this date.
