Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Four Harrow School gymnasts pose together in a studio group portrait, their athletic builds and form-fitting competition dress unmistakably marking this as a championship record photograph. The card was produced by Hills & Saunders at their Harrow studio, one of the most distinguished school photography firms of the Victorian era, holding a Royal Warrant as photographers by appointment to Queen Victoria. The negative number 12153 and the studio's branches at Eton, Oxford, Cambridge, and Sandhurst printed on the mount place this firmly within the school's documented photographic record, almost certainly dating from the 1880s or early 1890s.

Two of the young men are seated, two stand behind them, all with arms crossed or at ease, gathered around a carved pedestal table on which a large two-handled silver cup trophy rests prominently. A circular shield award is propped at center, and the seated figure at right holds a silver mug. The gymnasts wear short-sleeved athletic shirts, dark tights, and light shoes characteristic of Victorian gymnasium competition dress.

Hills & Saunders was one of the leading Victorian photographic firms, and they operated studios at Harrow and other leading schools, Oxford, Cambridge, and Sandhurst, having been appointed photographers to members of the royal family and granted a Royal Warrant in 1867. The Harrow studio's archive of glass negatives, including this negative, consisted of around 80,000 negatives and was taken into the care of Harrow School toward the end of the 1980s.

Inscribed in pencil on the reverse: "Home-Boarders / Champion Gym Four / Potts VIII (Capt.) / Ballantyne VIII / Scott / Galway / D"; negative number 12153, position number 2, with the printed Hills & Saunders Harrow studio imprint and the notation "All communications respecting this photograph to be addressed to Harrow."
